Supplies You Need

All you need to play is:

10 Solo cups
2-5 Ping pong balls
Gift cards (you can supply them all or have guests each bring one for a gift card exchange)
Cash, jingle bells, lottery tickets, or red pom poms are optional as fillers if you don’t have enough gift cards for all of the cups.

Note: Since gift cards will get taken with each turn, you may want multiple gift cards of the same thing so that you can replenish some of the cups. Or you can refill empty cups with cash. The key is to make sure everyone has an opportunity to grab something fun.

Objective of the Game

The objective is to bounce your ball into a cup with a gift card. If you get it in, you get what’s inside.

What Makes This Game So Fun?

First, bouncing the balls into the cups is fun all by itself. (My kids wanted to play this game even without the gift cards). But there’s an element of surprise and competition when you include gift cards. And if you let guests see the cups, they’ll get excited to aim for specific cups.

How to Play Christmas Gift Card Pong

1. Put gift cards in all of the cups or mix between gift cards and the other optional supplies. Then, place your Solo cups in the shape of a Christmas tree on the table.

2. Each player has a chance to bounce and get a ball into a cup. Depending on your group size and age, you can adjust the number of turns each player has.

3. If a player bounces their ball into a cup with the prize, they keep it.

To make it harder: Put the cups farther away. To make it easier: let kids stand closer.

What do you do if someone gets a gift card they don’t want?

You can always allow players to trade gift cards after the game. This pong game is fun and hilarious – it’s about the experience!

How to Make This a Gift Exchange Game

It’s actually quite easy to do!

1. Replace the gift cards and money with numbers that correspond to gifts. For example, you’ll place a #1 on a gift and a separate slip of paper with a #1 on it inside a cup.

2. Fill all the cups with the numbers corresponding to different gifts.

3. When a player bounces their ball into a cup, they get to unwrap the gift or choose to steal the gift. Play until everyone has had a chance to open or steal. (The first person who opened a gift can get an extra turn if you choose) After 3 rounds the gift is “dead” (it remains with the player who has it) and the cup is taken off of the table.
