What You’ll Need

For each mason jar, you’ll need:
- 1/4 cup dried minced onion
- 1/3 cup beef or vegetable bouillon granules
- 1 cup dry split peas
- 1/3 cup barley
- 1 cup dry lentils
- 1/2 cup uncooked white rice
- 2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
- 2 bay leaves
- 1/2 cup uncooked pasta (small shells, elbow, or ditalini) placed in a small bag or wrapped in plastic wrap
Estimated Cost: $7–9 per jar
Pro Tip: Buying ingredients in bulk or using store-brand bouillon and rice can bring the cost down to around $5–6 per jar, especially if you’re making several at once.
How to Make Friendship Soup Mix In A Jar

1. Layer ingredients in the order listed to keep the seasonings from settling through the other layers.
Optional: For extra color, divide the split peas and lentils into two portions and alternate them in the jar.

2. Place the macaroni in a small plastic bag or wrap it in plastic and tuck it at the top of the jar. This keeps the pasta fresh and separate until it’s time to cook.
3. Seal the jar tightly with a lid to keep everything fresh. (Store in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months.)

4. Tie on the printable tag with the soup instructions with jute twine or ribbon.
Additional ingredients listed on the label for preparing the soup:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 3 quarts water
- 1 15 oz can diced tomatoes, undrained
- 1 15 oz can tomato sauce
- salt and pepper to taste
To Make Friendship Soup

1. Remove pasta from the jar and set aside.
2. In a large pot, brown beef and drain.
3. Add diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, water, and soup mix. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally.
4. Remove bay leaves and add pasta, cover, and simmer 15 to 20 minutes or until everything is tender.
5. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Each jar makes about 6 servings of hearty soup. It’s perfect for sharing with friends or family!
