Supplies You Need
All you need to play is:
- A gift card or money (put it inside the gift)
- A wrapped gift. Wrap the gift according to who is playing. For example, if it’s young kids, you’ll want to wrap normally. For older kids or adults, I recommend using packing tape and making sure any loose pieces or corners are packed well. Just make sure that it isn’t impossible to open.
- A pair of oven mitts
- 2 dice
Objective of the Oven Mitt Christmas Game
The objective is to be the person who finally unwraps the gift. That person gets to keep the gift card or money that’s inside.

What Makes This Game So Fun?
First, you’ll look at this game and wonder “what in the world?” (I know I did!) But once you get started it quickly becomes the most hilarious and competitive thing you’ve ever seen. Even the quiet people in the back get in on the action.

How to Play The Oven Mitt Unwrap Game
1. Set a wrapped gift (well taped!) in the middle of a table. Then, two to six people stand around it. (If you have more than 6 people playing, you’ll probably want to split into two groups)
2. The first person to start puts on oven mitts and tries to unwrap the gift (no teeth or tools!). At the same time, the person to the left tries to roll double sixes using the dice.
3. Once the double sixes are rolled, the person unwrapping must pass the gift and mitts to the next person (the one who just rolled). The one who just rolled passes the dice to the next person to the left.

The game continues to move around the table until someone finally unwraps the gift. That person gets to keep whatever is inside.
Don’t have dice? You can also use a timer! 30 seconds is high-energy and silly. 45–60 seconds gives less frantic fun and is better for tricky wrapping.
Fun Variations & Tips To The Oven Mitt Christmas Game

- You can also use something besides money or a gift card. But keep in mind that the objects inside will get shaken up (and possibly beaten up). So, you don’t want anything breakable. Hard candy, lottery tickets, and durable toys are other good options.
- The game is much easier if you roll the dice on carpet. They fly around much less and you’ll have fewer arguments about it.
- To make the game more fast paced, you can change the rules around the dice. Pass the oven mitts any time someone rolls doubles instead of only double sixes.
- The host will need to supervise. This game can get intense, so an impartial referee is helpful.
- Is the game too easy? Try a blindfold bonus. Players must be blindfolded before starting.
- For a different version of the game, you can do more of a Saran wrap ball with different surprises tucked in. The game is played the same way, but more people will end up with something, so it’s a great option for young kids.
