Supplies You Need
All you need to play is:
- Foam board
- Glue gun and glue sticks
- Solo cups
- Gift cards and/or money (if it’s a kids school party, you can swap these out for small party favors)
- Gag gifts (ideas below)
- Tissue paper (I used red, but you could do green for a Christmas tree and a yellow one at the top for the star)
- Scissors
- Rubber bands
Note: To make sure everyone gets a turn, you’ll want to have as many (or more) cups than people at your gathering.
To Set Up The Christmas Tree Money Punch Game
Before you can play, you’ll have to make the punch board.
1. First, lay out your cups on the white board to figure out your design and the number of cups you need.

I made a Christmas tree design because it’s perfect (and easiest) for Christmas. You’ll want to use enough cups for everyone at the party, so if you’re doing a classroom Christmas party, make sure you have enough cups for the whole class.
You could also make a more complex design like a Santa hat or reindeer antlers. The sky is the limit on what you make, but you may want to use a marker to draw dots where your cups should go later when you glue.
2. Once you’ve figured out your design, fill all of your cups with gift cards, money, or gag gifts. Make sure you keep it random. (Read below for ideas!) If you’re doing a Christmas party theme, you can stick to items for that too (reindeer, Grinch, etc)

3. Next you need to cover your cups so that players have something to punch through. I folded my big sheets of red tissue paper in half twice and cut them out into squares. (Cut them all at once to make it faster!)

Note: Your tissue paper squares don’t need to be perfect. They just need to be able to cover the cups.
4. Place the piece of tissue paper on top of your cup.

Then, wrap a rubber band around the tissue paper and cup to secure it to the cup.
Repeat this process with all of your tissue paper until all of your cups are covered.
5. Finally, hot glue the bottom of each cup and place them hot glue side down on the board. Keep going until they’re all glued down, looking like the design you want.

Your game will look something like this when you’re ready to play!

Objective of the Money Punch Game
The objective is to “punch” a cup with a fun prize in it! This is just a silly and exciting way to give away money and gift cards at Christmas 🙂
What Makes This Game So Fun?
It’s the suspense and mystery of not knowing what’s in each cup. Plus, it’s surprisingly satisfying to punch your way through something! (If you don’t know what I’m talking about you definitely need to play this game!)
Fun fact: The punch game is inspired by The Price Is Right, where contestants punched through paper circles to reveal hidden prizes.

Fun Gag Gift Ideas for This Game
I used “Grinch pills” for my little gag gift with green M&Ms (you could also do this with Tic Tacs). Or try one of these fun silly white elephant gift ideas:
- Jingle bells
- Lottery tickets
- Candy cane puzzle (hilarious smashed up candy canes)
- Pennies
- Empty battery
- Reindeer poop: Chocolate covered raisins and a little note that says “fresh from the North Pole”
- Emergency underwear
- A single sock
- Toilet paper

How to Play The Christmas Punch Game
The general idea of a Christmas punch game is simple. Everyone gets a turn and on their turn they choose one cup to punch through (unless you’ve made enough for multiples)
They pull out any prizes inside and keep them.
How to Make This a Gift Exchange Game
It’s actually quite easy to do! There are two ways to do it:
- Instead of placing money or gifts in the cups, put numbers in the cups. The number each participant punches out will be the order of your gift exchange. Or you can have each number correspond to a specific wrapped gift.
- Have everyone bring a gift that’s small enough to put in a cup. Then, make the punching process your actual gift exchange. How fun!
Fun Christmas Punch Game Variations
For a fun variation, you can pair it with another game and make it more of a prize game. For example, have people answer Christmas trivia questions to be able to punch.

Common Questions and Answers
What if the players don’t like their prizes?
You get to make the rules for this game! If they don’t like their prize and want to switch with someone else who doesn’t like their prize, they can. Or you can decide beforehand that all players keep what they get.
What if you have more people than you have space on the board?
If you have more players than space on your foam board, prepare extra pre-filled cups ahead of time and keep them off to the side. As players punch out cups, simply replace the empty ones with the ready-to-go cups. It’s a perfect solution for large groups!
What if you need to swap out the money for party favors?
Money and gift cards are really exciting if you’re doing a Christmas party with family and friends. (Teens and adults are going to love this game!) But if it’s a school party, you can swap out the money with some of the ideas below.

- Candy sleighs
- Gum
- Granola bars
- Gummy bears
- Christmas candy
- Coupons or tickets to something
