Recently, I bought my five-year-old new shoes. (The velcro on the old ones wasn’t sticking anymore.) After we came home, she made me watch her run for a solid 20 minutes. Because in her mind, cool new shoes make you run faster.

Did you do this as a kid? I’ve been thinking this is why we like buying things as adults too.

Marketing and our own beliefs make it seem like we’re stronger, faster, or more popular with a new item.

It makes us feel good. For a day. Or until we see something better. One week later, my kiddo has forgotten all about her fast new shoes.

They’re now just her shoes.
