10 Best Ways to Save in March

First, here are the best ways to keep more money in your pocket this month!

1. March is thebest time to buy:

  • Jewelry (after Valentine’s Day mark-downs)
  • Snow blowers (once the weather in your area warms up)

2. Use Lent as a time to give up a money sucking habit. If you give up something for Lent each year, consider giving up a habit that drains your wallet. A few years ago, I gave up alcohol, which reset my health while saving money.

3. Make saving easier. Set up automatic transfers to your savings account this month to ensure you save consistently without thinking about it.

4. Take a Staycation for spring break. Instead of an expensive vacation, enjoy local attractions and activities for a more budget-friendly getaway.

5. Or travel for cheaper. There are many tips and tricks you can take to lower your spring break vacation costs. Here are just a few:

  • Come up with a travel budget before you book
  • Book early or last-minute to save money
  • Use travel credit cards and loyalty programs to save
  • Pack all the snacks! Bringing your own rather than buying at a convenience store will save you big bucks.

6. Cut out unnecessary subscriptions: This is the time of year I like to audit my streaming services. In the spring and summer, I try to get outside into nature more and cancel extra services as a nudge to do it.

7. Embrace free outdoor activities. March begins to warm up in many areas. Take advantage of free parks, trails, and community events in your area.

8. Use tax prep discounts. Keep an eye out for discounts on filing or do it yourself with services like TaxAct (if your finances aren’t complicated). If you file early, you’ll get your refund faster too.

9. Use your tax refund for good. Set aside at least half of your tax refund for your future. This could mean paying off debt, investing in yourself or the market, or bulking up your emergency fund.

10. Switch to seasonal produce. This month, buy fresh, in-season fruits and vegetables like asparagus and spinach. These are often cheaper and healthier in spring.

Next, these ideas are for bringing in more income this month.

1. Spring clean and sell unused items. Declutter your home and sell items you no longer need. It’s a win-win for your mental health AND your wallet. Plus, it’s easier than you might think with spring garages sales and Facebook Marketplace.

2. Sell unused winter gear. Sell gently used coats, boots, or snow gear your family has outgrown.

3. Offer tax prep help. If you’re well-versed in taxes, advertise your services as a tax organizer or assistant.

4. Offer spring cleaning services. Provide cleaning and organizing help for people looking to freshen up their spaces.

5. Turn a spring hobby into a side business: As spring begins, offer lawn mowing, raking, or gardening services to neighbors.
