5 July Money Moves – Time Off & Lessons Learned
Hi friend! Once a month I highlight 5 real-life ways I saved, earned, and invested.
Here are the money moves this month:
1. I Talked About Money With My Son
When I went to register the kids for school, we found out that my 12-year-old had to pay for part of a school computer that broke last year. They told him in May that he would be responsible for paying, but $180 was a surprise.
He paid without complaining. And I’m glad he learned this slightly painful lesson young (instead of a much more painful lesson later). He now understands why we tell him to “take care of your things!” and that nothing is free.
2. I Took Time Off This Month
Want to save this idea?
Up front, this doesn’t seem like a money goal. Constantly checking off a to-do list feels productive. Even when it’s not.
It’s the conditioning that society has drilled into us. Except that it’s wrong.
Studies show that the most productive people have periods of rest in their life.
So, instead of quitting, making myself sick, or burning out mentally, I’d rather recharge and come back more motivated than ever. Life is a marathon. And I consider this an important money (and life) move.
3. I Did a Freezer Challenge
I set the rules, did the clean out, and then tried to use up something every day for 7 days. Read the article to find out how it went!
4. We took a Family Summer Vacation
I typically choose nature vacations. Why?
- Nature is a stress reliever and is good for the soul. Spend 10 minutes staring at the mountains, desert, or ocean and tell me you don’t feel better inside. There’s magic in the air.
- Nature vacations tend to be cheaper than big city and amusement park trips.
- They get us off of screens so much more. Lower stimulation is good for all of us.
- I want my kids to understand the beauty that nature has to offer. No crazy commercialism is required to have fun.

5. We Used Grocery Food Instead of Eating Out
And finally, throughout our trip we opted for our own food from the grocery store.
In fact, I think we only ate out twice the entire week – once in downtown Estes, CO (way overpriced). And once on the 10 1/2 hour drive back. Otherwise, we picnicked and made use of the kitchen in our VRBO. I love how much money this saves our family, but I also like that it helps us keep food healthier too. It’s a win-win!
